Protect Your Pets

Tips to protect your pets from fireworks:

The flashing lights and loud noises from fireworks can cause stress and fear for many pets. The Cape of Good Hope SPCA advises the following:

For cats and dogs
• Close all windows and draw the curtains to muffle the noise from outside. This will also block out the flashing lights.
• Turn on the TV or radio to mask the sounds (gradually increase the volume during the day, but not so loud that it would upset your pet).
• Make sure your pets are kept indoors before the fireworks start.
• Give cats and dogs plenty of spaces to hide.
• Reschedule your dog’s walks to the daytime.
• Get anti-anxiety medication: If your pet is very anxious, a veterinarian can prescribe medication to help.

For small rodents (like rabbits, and hamsters)
• Bring your pet’s cage/hutch into a quiet room. If you can’t bring them inside, try a garage or shed.
• Give your small pet extra bedding or straw so they can hide and feel safe.
• You could cover the cage with a thick blanket to block out some of the lights and noises, but make sure to leave enough ventilation.

Pet owners are advised to ID your pet: Make sure your pet has a collar and ID tag, even if they’re kept indoors.

If you have any information relating to the illegal sale or use of fireworks, report it to the City of Cape Town’s Public Emergency Communication Centre: contact 021 480 7700 from a cell phone and 107 from a landline and report.
