Before starting at the V&A Waterfront, I wasn’t comfortable in the water. But since the neighbourhood trained me to be a seal monitor – checking up daily on our seal population of up to 80 seals – diving to cut them free from any plastic pollution that they get stuck in.

I’m Joshio, Marina Manager at the Waterfront. My team and I noticed plastic pollution entering our waters through stormwater drainpipes. So, we collaborated with partners to design and install catchment nets that we, as the V&A, clear out every week. We’re committed to reducing plastic waste from affecting our oceans.

My name is Mathapelo, one of the founders of Monkeybiz. As a passionate artisan, I continue the legacy of hand-crafted beadwork. As a long-time collaborator with Joy from Africa, the V&A’s festive season, I can bring employment to my community while keeping our traditions alive.
