Mikhailia Vera Martha Petersen

Working in the medium of analogue film photography, Petersen focuses on portraiture. Through each project, the artist aims to capture her subjects in a truthful and celebratory manner, portraying those individuals she shoots through narrative-based story-telling, as opposed to isolated and essentializing single images. Interested in the post-colonial landscape of Cape Town, her work seeks to re-address the way POC and LGBTQIA+ people are framed within this context through hardship and oppression.
Instead her photographs highlight the beauty and strength of people.
Mikhailia Petersen was born in 1992 in Cape Town, South Africa, where she currently lives and works.

In 2024, Petersen's work was published in Reflecting Black, alongside Africa's foremost contemporary young photographic talents, edited by Trevor Stuurman, and published by The Manor. Petersen's work has been published in various reputable South African and international publications, including Vogue Italia, NATAAL, NiCotiNe and Doek!Lit.

Most recently, she was selected as a finalist for the Latitudes ANNA Award In 2023, Petersen presented work with CHURCH Projects (Cape Town) at FNB Art Joburg. Further group exhibitions include Your 501 Story by Photo Vogue and Levi's (Online); Curatorial Voices: Modern and Contemporary Art from Africa, Strauss and Co, Cape Town and KWAAI: An exhibition on Coloured Identity, at Eclectica Gallery, Cape Town, all in 2023; and Open Plot, curated by RESERVOIR at THK Gallery, Cape Town, in 2022.
